I am attached to the idea that a piece of music, or any art work, could be set so it has a certain degree of freedom from our biases and limitations, and its behaviour may seem like that of a living organism.
Working with the visual programming language Pure Data, I tend to structure my patches in a way that my input isn't really necessary to put the piece into motion: the patch, on a very basic level, is creating changes by itself.
Playing the patch is just as much about making decisions on the general direction of the piece, as to letting go and going along with the in-built unpredictability of the patch’s micro changes.
Much like following, and sometimes pruning, a tree's outgrowths.
